For over 30 years, Instinct Hardware has been using only grade T316 stainless steel to craft our ironmongery. So why have we chosen this material over the industry standard T304 alloy?
Why We Prefer T316 Stainless Steel
Grade 304 is the most common stainless steel used. This usually contains between 16-24% chromium and varying levels of nickel. The usual standard is 18/8 (18% Chromium/8% Nickel). Grade 316 stainless steel has these same compounds (at 16/10) but also incorporates 2-3% molybdenum. This clever chemical is what makes all the difference to the benefits found in 316.
In recent years, hygiene has been at the forefront of everyone’s minds more than ever before. The corrosion resistance of 316 stainless steel means that it can stand extensive cleaning and detergents without breaking down.
No matter what cleaning materials you prefer, or how often you need to thoroughly clean commercial areas, grade 316 ironmongery will allow you the flexibility to have the very highest levels of hygiene. This fact alone makes this stainless steel a great choice for high-usage areas that will be subjected to frequent cleaning routines, such as hotels, public areas and in healthcare settings.
Grade T316 stainless steel is almost indestructible – heat it up, place it in water, it will stand up to the test. Grade T316 is classed as marine-grade, so it can be put into corrosive atmospheres and won’t yield. Ditto with warmer climes. When heated, grade T316 ironmongery offers higher levels of strength.
Whether you’re looking for indoor or outdoor ironmongery, you can rely on grade 316 to stay rust-free. This resistance also has benefits for any environments with salt or stronger acidic compounds, meaning it is ideal for food prep areas.
We have chosen to always work with T316 grade stainless steel because it offers high levels of strength across the board. With ultimate tensile strength of up to 79,800 PSI, this steel means business.
This strength therefore conveys to the ironmongery. Where the ironmongery is subjected to chemicals as mentioned above, using this grade of steel improves the life expectancy of the product drastically. 316 ironmongery will last a lifetime, which is why we are able to offer a 25 year guarantee on mechanical parts. This level of strength makes 316 stainless steel perfect for commercial projects where durability is key.
So – there you have it. Whilst T316 stainless steel can be tougher to work with, we have the experience needed in milling, drilling and shaping this material into the beautiful ironmongery you can see on our product pages.
Grade T316 stainless steel, combined with the skill of our manufacturing, will produce long-lasting, quality ironmongery you can enjoy for years to come, wherever you feature it. Why not take a look at our full range of hardware – all using T316 stainless steel.
